What can a CEREC machine really do?

Are you curious about the source of your crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays and dental implants? Despite being one of the most versatile pieces of equipment in our dental office, not many people in Janesville know about CEREC machines and their many benefits. Luckily, Dreier Family Dental has the answers. You’ll be CEREC ‘qualified’ in no time.

What is a CEREC machine?

CEREC is actually an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. While the name may be difficult to understand, the benefits are obvious. CEREC machines use 3D scans to produce ceramic inlays, onlays, and crowns that match the exact shape and size of our patients’ teeth. Best of all, the CEREC machine allows us to perform same-day restorations with crowns and dental implants. This means better, faster restorative dentistry for you.

How does it work?

The CEREC machine relies on 3D imaging software to create a detailed representation of your teeth. To get this information, your teeth are x-rayed, photographed, and captured by the machine, which processes the information to display a full 3D model of your mouth. Computer-Aided Design (or CAD) software then refines that model to highlight the areas that need restoration.

Once completed, the CEREC milling unit will sculpt the designed restoration out of a ceramic block. The ceramic is chosen to match your natural tooth color almost exactly. At our Janesville office, the CEREC machine can craft the restoration itself within the space of 10-20 minutes. During this time, Dr. Dreier, Dr. Connie Winter, or Dr. James Winter will prepare your teeth for the restoration placement. All that is left is for the restoration to be permanently sealed to the tooth. This is the most delicate part of the procedure. If placed perfectly, your crown will have no chance of accidental removal.

This is all done within a single appointment! No return trip or rescheduled appointment. At the end of your procedure, our dentists will tell you how best to care for your restoration so that it can last well into your future.

The benefits of a CEREC machine.

While the most obvious benefit of the CEREC unit is the time saved on procedures, there are many other subtle benefits. Being fitted with a crown in one appointment ensures that you do not need a temporary crown. As temporary crowns are not strongly adhered to the tooth, they require more care and attention. Certain foods should not be eaten with temporary crowns to avoid breaking or losing the crown itself. CEREC crowns remove this problem by producing the permanent crown in one day.

The full 3D imaging of the CAD software is another benefit because it eliminates waste. As the model created for the CEREC machine is so precise, no extra material is needed, and the crown will fit your mouth exactly. Little to no adjustment is necessary.

The accuracy of the CAD technology is also proven in the exact replication of your missing tooth. The size and shape and appearance will be almost identical to the rest of the teeth in your mouth. With our Janesville CEREC machine, we can create a tooth that perfectly mimics your missing or damaged tooth. There’s no noticeable difference between the ceramic restoration and the rest of your teeth.
