Poor quality sleep is a problem that affects millions of Americans, and many people are unaware that they even suffer from the condition. Sleep apnea & other sleep conditions can lead to daytime drowsiness and depression/anxiety, as well as contribute to serious medical conditions and put you at risk of a stroke or a heart attack.
At Dreier Family Dental, our team specialize in diagnosing and treating obstructive sleep apnea. Come in for a consultation or talk to our team members to learn more about your treatment options. As treatment coordinator and head of our sister company Southern WI Sleep Solutions, Cara is continually updating her education to fully help our patients with their sleep wellness through our oral sleep appliances.
Southern WI Sleep Solutions
Is still Dreier Family Dental, but focuses on the sleep quality in our patients. As a local dentist office we are now able to offer oral sleep appliances to people suffering from poor sleep quality, snoring, clenching/grinding, weight gain, etc.
Understanding Sleep Apnea
There are several different kinds of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type and is characterized by the soft tissues of the mouth or throat relaxing during sleep and obstructing the airway.
Sleep apnea is not the same as snoring. Snoring is caused by tissue vibration due to turbulent airflow in the mouth and nose. In sleep apnea, the tissues of the palate and throat actually completely block (obstruct) the airway for several seconds or even longer, leading to an inability to breathe. Snoring is a major sign of sleep apnea, but the presence of snoring alone does not always indicate sleep apnea.
Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
There are a number of different signs and symptoms that could indicate the presence of sleep apnea. If you suspect you or your partner is suffering from this issue, look for the following signs:
- Headaches upon waking in the morning
- Waking up in the middle of the night choking or gasping for air
- Tossing and turning or excessive restlessness at night
- Heavy and prolonged snoring, often followed by snorts or gasping
- Poor-quality, non-restful sleep
- Daytime sleepiness
- Awaking with a sore throat and nose or dry mouth
If you recognize one or several of these, it may be a good idea to get an official diagnosis from a sleep specialist.
Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea
There are a number of different options to treat sleep apnea. In the past, the most popular method was a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure. By using a mask and an air pump, air is gently pumped into the airway and lungs, preventing the collapse of soft tissue and the obstruction of the airway.
However, CPAP machines are bulky and require electric power, so they are inconvenient. While they are can be an effective choice for some cases of obstructive sleep apnea, alternative treatments like oral appliances are becoming more popular.
Oral appliances are similar to retainers or mouthguards used to treat teeth grinding. They are custom-built to shift the position of the jaw and surrounding tissue. This prevents oral muscles from relaxing and collapsing the airway. In rare cases, oral surgery may be needed to modify and remove soft tissues in the throat and palate.
