Tooth Extractions

Tooth Extractions at Dreier Family Dental
Tooth extractions may seem scary and intimidating, but that’s not the case. Tooth extractions are very common, especially for patients who need their wisdom teeth removed. The procedure is simple, and discomfort can be minimized with sedation during the extraction process.
Dr. Brandon Dreier, Dr. Connie, and Dr. James of Dreier Family Dental are skilled dentists with years of experience performing gentle, safe tooth extractions. Here’s everything you need to know about the extraction process at Dreier Family Dental:
How Does Tooth Extraction Work?
Tooth extractions are very simple procedures, and each extraction typically only takes a few minutes. First, one of our dentists will clean your mouth and numb the areas from which teeth will be extracted. Once the area has been numbed, a specialized extraction tool is used to loosen the tooth and extract it quickly and painlessly. Most patients feel absolutely no pain or discomfort throughout the procedure, and it’s over in just a few minutes.
Why Would I Need A Tooth Extraction?
The most common reason for a tooth extraction is the growth of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth typically do not erupt properly, and this can cause many issues. Problematic wisdom teeth can cause damage to surrounding teeth, ruin years of orthodontic work, and even cause dental infections. That’s why around 85% of people have their wisdom teeth extracted.
Tooth extractions may also be required to correct issues other than problematic wisdom teeth. If you have serious periodontal disease and unhealthy gums, some of your teeth may need to be extracted. Additionally, f you have one or more infected teeth that cannot be saved by root canal therapy, they may be pulled.
A dentist may also suggest an extraction if a tooth has been severely damaged by an impact injury, such as a slip and fall or a car accident.
Does It Take A Long Time To Recover From A Tooth Extraction?
Usually, major symptoms like pain and swelling will disperse within 1-2 days. Some bleeding and discomfort are normal, and can usually be treated by pain medication prescribed by our doctors.
You should feel fully recovered within 3-5 days of the tooth extraction. Make sure to follow all of Dr. Dreier’s instructions for recovery in order to avoid issues like dry socket, and to make sure your mouth heals properly. Your sutures should dissolve within a week.
